Foundation Overview

Using Millipore products, our customers often are able to make significant contributions to society. Research scientists, production engineers, quality control professionals and health care practitioners employ our tools, technologies and services to discover, develop and manufacture therapeutic compounds. Millipore products aid in the progress toward discovering a cure for cancer and in the production of batches of antibiotics that enable people to live longer, healthier lives.

While we believe that Millipore’s business pursuits often benefit society, we also realize that as a responsible member of the community, we have an additional commitment to serve the public interest more directly. In January 1985, Millipore established The Millipore Foundation, and chartered it to:

Support Millipore's interest in scientific and technological advancement;
Support specific public policy issues that affect Millipore's stockholders, employees and customers;
Help improve the quality of life in Millipore's communities; and,
Assist and encourage Millipore's employees in volunteer efforts.

Grant Making

The Millipore Foundation has recently restructured its charitable giving policy to more closely align with the values of the company and the interests of Millipore employees. As a result the Foundation is dedicating its grant making to the following areas:

Education: Our funding is primarily devoted to programs that enhance science education in grades K-12 in the Greater Boston area. Specifically we are interested in:

Out-of-school science enrichment programs that are in-depth and inquiry-based;
Programs that enhance teacher training in the sciences;
Museum-based science education programs;
Programs that encourage students to enter careers in the sciences

Life Science Research: At Millipore, we value innovation, execution, integrity, teamwork and passion, and we seek to fund Life Science researchers who share these values.

Local Communities: Millipore makes grants to support education, social services, cultural programs, and public safety in the communities where it has operations in the U.S.: Bedford, Billerica, Burlington, Danvers, Massachusetts; Jaffrey, NH; Temecula, CA; Kankakee, IL; and St. Charles, MO.

Merrimack Valley: With its headquarters in Billerica, MA, Millipore takes an interest in the nearby cities of Lowell and Lawrence, MA by supporting youth programs and social service agencies.

Employee Programs

Foundation programs also encourage Millipore employee participation in charitable giving and volunteerism.

Matching Gift Program: The Foundation offers a dollar-for-dollar match for contributions made by Millipore employees to non-profit organizations in the areas of education, social services, culture, health care, and the environment.

Voluntary Service Grant Program: Employees who devote significant volunteer time to non-profit organizations in their communities may request program support from the Foundation to assist these organizations.

Scholarship Program: Each year the Foundation offers two $5,000 college scholarships to the children of Millipore employees renewable for an additional three years for a total award of $20,000.

Volunteer Day: The Millipore Foundation offers an annual Massachusetts Volunteer Day where employees choose to participate in a variety of community projects developed in response to employee feedback. In 2007, projects included home construction for Habitat for Humanity in Lawrence, painting at the Parker School in Billerica, food sorting for the Merrimack Valley Food Bank in Lowell, and cleanup of the Shawsheen River in Billerica.

Carbon Offset Program: As we drive, fly, and heat our homes, we all generate greenhouse gases that result in global warming. In addition to conserving energy by changing our lifestyles, we can further lessen our negative global impact by purchasing carbon offsets. Carbon offsets are donations invested in programs that enhance the environment and reduce our carbon footprint, such as solar and wind projects to generate renewable energy. The Millipore Foundation has designed a program to financially match employee purchases of carbon offsets. Visit our Sustainability pages for further information.

Organization

The Millipore Foundation, established in 1985, is a legal entity separate from Millipore Corporation. Each year the company makes a tax-deductible contribution to the Foundation. In fiscal 2006 (October 1, 2005–September 30, 2006), the Millipore Foundation made 103 cash grants totaling $505,415. In addition the Foundation contributed matching gifts totaling $222,345 to 489 organizations supported by our employees.

The Foundation, through its board of trustees, determines how to best allocate its funds, based on its mission. Any money left over after grants are made is retained in the Foundation's reserve account.

The Foundation is governed by a board of trustees, made up of Millipore senior executives, which reports to the Public Policy Committee of Millipore’s board of directors. Current members of the Foundation's board of trustees are:

Jeffrey Rudin, Chairman
Corporate Vice President and General Counsel

Charles Wagner
Chief Financial Officer

Lynn Garvin
Vice President, Corporate Communications

Debbie Hilbert, Foundation Representative, administers the Foundation and meets with the Foundation's trustees every 10–12 weeks to review funding requests and ensure Foundation dollars are targeted to meet specific objectives.
